ABOUT THE SUMMIT

This Campus Security Summit is a one-day event for security and safety campus and education officials to learn about new solutions and technologies for campus security, emergency response and management, and public and life safety. During the summit, attendees will have a rare opportunity to hear firsthand stories from area campus police chiefs, as well as network and learn vital information from industry experts and each other on crisis communication, active shooters, access control and more.

8:15 am - 9:30 am Keynote: The New School Police Force – Student-Focused Salient Keynote Sponsor

Chief Ron Applin of Atlanta Public Schools presents the case for a new kind of school security. In 2016, APS launched its own police department designed in alignment with a national “triad” model where school resource officers counsel, police and teach. These officers represent a new kind of police – trained specifically for the school environment with skills in social emotional learning, positive behavior supports, restorative practices and crisis intervention for youth.

10:00 am - 11:00 am Student Advocacy: Identify, Intervene, Support and Reconnect Forsyth County Schools has instituted the Student Advocacy Specialist program to identify and implement potentially harmful actions by students in the K-12 setting. With an increase in the number of students harming themselves, suicidal ideation and uttering suicidal comments, school officials have taken a proactive approach to identify those threats, and treat students by supporting families and students. The school district also works hand-in-hand with local law enforcement the county division of family and children services to identify all types of threats, and ensure that future signs of violence are dealt before an action is taken.

10:00 am - 11:00 am Creating a Critical Incident Safety Plan Assa Abloy

Campuses put much thought and time into their emergency response planning and lock-down procedures, but without the right mind set and situational awareness these plans can be ineffective. This session will address the importance of maintaining trained response to a crisis or a violent situation where lock-down procedures, as well as emphasis building confidence in the campus environment with staff and students. You also will learn about the importance of working together with local law enforcement and using effective strategies in preventing campus violence.

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Parent/Student Reunification The effective response of a school district to a critical incident begins with incorporating “reunification” into the school safety plan. Many school districts and public safety agencies are under-prepared to manage the incident, manage reunification, and manage the overwhelming response from the community. The learning objectives from this session include a discussion of key considerations in developing the reunification plan, a discussion of integral relationships between agencies and schools, and a “Must Do” in making the plan a reality.
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Using Today's Technology to Secure a Campus Assa Abloy Technology alone cannot reduce crime rates. However, technology advancements in combination with traditional and proven law enforcement approaches can have a dramatic impact. Join Chief Tom Saccenti (Ret.) to learn about the 49% reduction in part 1 crimes that occurred on the campus of the University of West Georgia. Chief Saccenti will discuss the implementation of Shot Spotter, LPRs, Motorola all-in-one body worn cameras, cruise lights and the guest registration system. All of these were used in a campus-wide community policing approach to reduce crime and increase the feeling of safety on campus.
2:15 pm - 3:30 pm Panel Discussion: Preparing for an Active Shooter Verkada The panel will discuss the topic of Preparing for an Active Shooter. You will learn how each school or campus has planned to mitigate this threat. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.
